The East Coast low is predicted to bring heavy rain and localised flooding to Sydney, causing traffic chaos and commuter disruptions. Coastal areas between Newcastle and Wollongong are also warned of damaging winds. The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for Sydney, the Illawarra, and the Central Tablelands, particularly concerned about the Blue Mountains to Narooma region.

The brunt of the East Coast low is expected to dump between 120 and 200 millimetres of rain over Sydney late Friday afternoon and into Saturday morning, causing traffic and commuter chaos as well as localised flooding.

In the 24 hours to 9am on Friday, Wahroonga experienced 116 mm of rain, while Sydney took 111 mm. Penrith copped 85 mm, and Kings Langley recorded 72 mm. “That means the Warragamba will move into a spill, likely Monday morning,” George said. “What’s important about that is that the spill will occur likely when the rainfall event has moved on, so it is very important that the community remain vigilant.”“We opened Narrabeen Lagoon last night, but it closed again naturally because the lagoon level was roughly the same as the ocean,” mayor Sue Heins said. “The lagoon level needs to be higher to beat the waves.

Rain damaged essential signalling equipment at Redfern Station early on Friday morning, causing significant delays to rail commuters across the city.
