Natural gas and electricity are set to decline after a large increase last year.
Most Americans are likely to see their heating bills fall this winter, potentially keeping overall inflation down.
The cost of heating a home with natural gas is likely to drop by an average of 21% from last year, the agency predicts. That should save the average household about $160 over the course of the winter. Wholesale natural-gas prices have fallen because gas supply is currently outpacing demand. Last year, gas prices were high because the U.S. was sending more of it to Europe to replace Russian gas after its invasion of Ukraine.
Propane—a byproduct of natural gas processing and oil refining—should see a decline of 3%, but heating oil expenditures are set to rise about 8% because there is a shortage of it in storage. Heating oil is mostly used in the Northeast.
