The heat index in five areas in the country hit the “danger level” after reaching at least 42 degrees Celsius (℃) on Tuesday, April 18, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said. ManilaBulletin

PAGASA said the heat index is the measurement of how hot it feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature.

Based on its monitoring, the areas with the highest heat indexes observed on Tuesday were Roxas City, Capiz ; Sangley Point, Cavite ; Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte ; Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Pasay City; ; and Virac, Catanduanes . Meanwhile, PAGASA’s two other monitoring stations in Metro Manila—Science Garden in Quezon City and Port Area in Manila—recorded 39°C and 40°C heat index respectively on Tuesday.

PAGASA said heat indexes between 42°C and 51°C carry impending “danger” as “heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely” and “heat stroke is probable with continued activity.” Meanwhile, PAGASA said observe “extreme caution” when heat indexes reach 32°C to 41°C, as “heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible” and “continuing activity could result in heatstroke.”In the next 24 hours, PAGASA said the entire country may experience partly cloudy to cloudy weather with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, mostly in the afternoon or evening.
