THIS past Sunday, June 25, I had lunch at Supersam along Scout Tobias in Timog area. Michael Angelo Chua, chairman of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines hosted a meet-and-greet with the 25 scholars or beneficiaries of his foundation, the Michael Angelo Foundation.

I knew of his foundation, and merely thought he sponsored a few kids’ education. Imagine my surprise that he had 25 college students in his program. Some hail from the National Capital Region; others from the provinces. “The big schools have more than enough,” Chua noted. “It would be nice to help those from the smaller schools including students not normally given this opportunity.”

He also provides an opportunity for some to earn some money. One of his students also used to help in the management PCAP events. One of the scholars whose name I will not mention as I did not ask his permission, writes about sports and for his age, seems well versed in local events. “While I am proud of EJ Obiena and what he has done for the country and his own alma maters, I do hope that our sports leaders support other athletes in track and field. There are a lot of good ones,” he opined.
