A team of healthcare providers used a relatively new technology to successfully transport a heart from Alaska to Boston for an organ transplant.

Dr. Joseph Rubelowsky, a cardiothoracic surgeon, led the operation, taking off from his hometown of Cleveland for Juneau, Alaska. From there, he collected the organ and quickly headed back east, travelling 2,506 miles before arriving at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

For years, transplate specialists have used everyday coolers to transport hearts across state lines in a rush to get them to a patient in time. While that's been successful on many occassions, it can be hard to manipulate the temperature and protect the heart from tissue damage due to below-freezing temperatures.
