The American Heart Association turns 100 this year, and ABC 6 is proud to partner with them for this year's Heart Ball.
At the gala on Friday night in Dublin, a local teenager will be honored for his story. 15-year-old Canen Dickman is alive today because the people around him knew what to do during the difficult and surprising situation.
Well I really don't remember that day at all. I don't even remember the morning before it happened, or the day after, so it's all just a blur," Canen shared with ABC 6."It's been a little bit of a struggle for him, hard to watch as a mom, but we're super proud of him. And he's really taking something that was difficult in his life and turned it around for good," said Pam Dickman, Canen's mother.
Canen and his mother are all about spreading the word on how crucial it is for everyone to know what to do in an emergency. They're on a mission to make sure more people are ready to jump into action when someone's life is on the line. They testified before state lawmakers in favor of House Bill 47, which would require schools to teach CPR and have AED's.We're very excited and honored to be selected to go to Washington, D.C.
Canen says the process is simple, and the impact profound. He and his mom hope their message resonates, serving as a reminder of the life-saving potential within all of us. I want people to take away that you never know when a cardiac arrest or something else can happen with your heart, because I've had no history or anything like that, and it's just good to be prepared and know CPR, and be ready to take action if something happens," Canen said.Canen's story serves as a powerful testament to the profound difference that preparedness and swift action can make in the face of a medical emergency.
