New South Wales residents are being urged to remain on high alert against foods prone to cause listeriosis after a number of cases of the bacterial infection were confirmed across the state.

Director of NSW Health’s One Health branch Keira Glasgow said the alarm was sounded after an unusual spike in listeriosis cases in the state, with more than two dozen contractions already recorded.

“There are a range of foods that present very real risks to people who are older, pregnant or have underlying health conditions such as cancer, diabetes, heart, liver, or kidney disease, or who are on medications such as corticosteroids which impact immune systems. Symptoms of a listeria infection typically kick in within a few days of consuming the contaminated food but can take up to a month or more to appear. Early signs of infection include fever, muscle aches and nausea.
