San Marcos will decide whether to end citations and arrests for misdemeanor marijuana...
Hays County Election personnel load voting machines onto a truck to be taken to early voting polling locations from their offices in San Marcos on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022.HAYS COUNTY — With the Nov. 8 midterm election right around the corner, quickly growing Hays County is preparing for a record-high voter turnout — and an end to a contentious local election cycle marked by controversial races.
“There’s a lot of concern in the west county and north county about growth,” which likely will outweigh partisan concerns, Strother said. “That has such a personal impact on families and small businesses; I don’t see partisan stuff creeping into the county judge’s race like you would expect to see at the gubernatorial level.”
As county judge, Becerra has aligned himself with left-leaning causes like jail reform and marijuana decriminalization. He was among the first to sign a San Marcos ballot initiative in February calling for the decriminalization of small amounts of marijuana possession in the city, a referendum that will be on the city’s November ballot.
David Puryear, the Republican prosecutor, and Kelly Higgins, the defense attorney, both pledge to tackle the critical backlog of cases in the Hays County courts — some cases are as much as five to six years old. As a result, Hays County’s jail has become more crowded and an increasingly painful drain on taxpayer dollars.
“I concede up front that I’m not the prosecuting type,” he writes on his campaign website, “although I intend to try some misdemeanor cases.”The current Hays County Commissioners Court comprises three Republicans and two Democrats, including Becerra, the judge. Two of those seats are up for grabs Nov. 8, and the outcome could change the makeup of the court.
In Precinct 4, incumbent Republican Walt Smith is going up against independent Susan Cook for the seat that covers the Dripping Springs, Buda and Driftwood region of the county. Smith has had his share of drama this election cycle, having Proposition A has been dubbed a “reeferendum” by advocates. Mano Amiga and Ground Game began signing up and mobilizing voters in January, including holding a kickoff event at Texas State University, to get the 4,400 signatures required to get the initiative on the November ballot. They succeeded in getting all necessary signatures in June.
