The county jail inmate, identified Tuesday as 36-year-old Joshua Leon Wright, was shot and killed Monday by a Hays County corrections officer who was guarding him as he received medical treatment at Seton Hospital in Kyle. According to a news release from the Hays County Sheriff’s Office on Monday evening, Wright attempted to escape, then “assaulted the corrections officer and ran on foot through the emergency room.”

The officer then shot the inmate, according to the news release. Becerra cited unspecified “reports circulating” about the incident, including that Wright “had his feet shackled, that he was shot in the back, multiple times,” and that a stun gun was available but not used in the incident.Charley Wilkison, the executive director of Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, posed on Facebook that Wright “attacked deputy, moved toward sharp medical instruments, began running toward hospital staff/civilians” before the “deputy” discharged his firearm.
