It's a fun one that will get you muddy and wet.
One of Kualoa Ranch's taro paddies, where visitors are able to tend to the land in the Malama Experience tour.On the east side of Oahu, the 4,000-acre Kualoa Ranch is known for being the setting of over 200 Hollywood movies and TV shows produced on its property, including"50 First Dates,""Lost,""Jumanji," and the"Jurassic Park" franchise.
“The concept of malama aina is that it can be anything. We could be planting trees up in the mountains; that would be malama,” says Iwi. “ I have a bull in Kaaawa Valley. His name is Dakota. Sometimes we go malama him! Brush him, fly spray him, feed him treats, we check to make sure nothing’s dangerous in his pen. He’s like the biggest puppy.”What people may not know about Kualoa Ranch is that it’s actually a working ranch and farm.
I watch Iwi get into the water with her long pants and boots, and love that she couldn't care less they’re getting wet. Less gracefully, I slide butt-first down the bank and put my bare feet in the murky water, which comes to my knees. My feet squish in the mud that wraps around them as I slowly walk toward the taro growing in dirt mounds.
In the Hawaiian creation story, Wakea and Papa created the islands, then gave birth to a daughter, Hoohokulani. The daughter had a boy, Haloa, who was stillborn. Haloa was buried, and from the site sprouted the first taro plant. Later, Hoohokulani had another child who lived and became the first Hawaiian, the brother to the taro plant.
“Hold the stem and use your foot to push down,” she tells me. I lift my right foot out of the water and squish the mud next to the taro plant until I can see the corm, the bulb-like underground stem. Then using my hands, I pull at the stalk until the roots loosen. It doesn’t take long, and soon I stand holding the uprooted taro plant in my hand like a prize.
What’s left is a freshly cut stem, with the top of the corm still intact so that it can be put into the ground for planting. It’s an ongoing life cycle that Iwi and the ranch hands tend to and care for, with the assistance of visitors on this tour, just as it has been done since the beginning of time.
