Personally, I find nothing derogatory about the word “Indian,” especially for a school district named after the river that supported native peoples long before white men arrived.
Apparently a majority of those who took a Susquehanna schools survey a couple of years ago thought keeping the Indian mascot was A-OK. Some, however, preferred switching to Lions, although I can find no historical information suggesting lions ever lived in Susquehanna Twp.board in power now hasn’t picked up lionJust in case you think some Susquehanna folks are making waves for no reason, there exists a group calledthat has been trying to exterminate offensive mascots since 1968.
Personally, I find Redskins and Red Raiders offensive. I understand why they want to ban the tomahawk chop. Still, I’m not enraged by a logo of an Indian any more than I am by an Indian-head penny. But then, I’m not a Native American. What I am wondering now is if my own psyche is damaged. My school mascot was the Crusaders. What I know as an adult is that in their attempts to conquer Jerusalem, the crusaders murdered thousands of people, including Jews, Muslims, women and children.
