NSTnation Have good safety and health practices for New Year, says Lam Thye

Alliance for Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the public should not only be safe from terrorism, crime, drugs and violence but also from tragedies which are of our own doing whether on the roads, in residential and public areas or at workplaces.

Lee said the fact that landslides and road cave-ins are a frequent occurrence points to our failure to make the culture of maintenance and safety a way of life. Besides that, he also said if we do not manage efficiently occupational safety and health, accidents can occur at workplaces. “Every effort must be made to inculcate the culture of maintenance and safety and those who are placed in charge must never shirk their responsibility,” he said.

“In this connection it is time for the government and the public to declare a full scale war against vandalism which has been identified as a contributory cause to the damage and destruction of many public amenities,” he said. “Although our living standard has improved, unfortunately our consciousness about safety is still unsatisfactory and not up to the mark.”
