For decades, baseball fans have argued passionately over the merits of the designated hitter. Major League Baseball adopted the DH first in 1973—but only for teams in the American League, an admission at the time that the issue was far from settled. The designated-hitter rule basically says that each team’s lineup will have one player who only bats, as opposed to everyone battingplaying in the field, as the game was originally played and as the National League continued to play—until this year, when, for the first time, teams in both leagues are using the DH.
