Harley Quinn has a dark new origin story. It turns out that long before her involvement with the Joker, she still possessed villainous traits.
The dark new backstory of Harley Quinn has been revealed in a recent comic. It turns out that long before her involvement with the Joker, she still possessed villainous traits as Dr. Harleen Quinzel.
Throughout her comic book history, Harley Quinn has commonly been depicted as the corrupted version of psychologist Harleen Quinzel. The innocent and intelligent Dr. Quinzel was a trusted doctor who treated the criminally insane. After taking the Joker as her patient in Arkham Asylum, she became infatuated with him and took on her villainous persona.
The exchange of dialogue highlights Dr. Quinzel’s cold outlook on her work and the lives of her patients. Considering the villain she later becomes, she is surprisingly factual and lacks the empathy that even Harley Quinn has been known to possess at times. In her original origin story, she is seduced by the Joker’s manipulative schemes. This version of Dr. Quinzel appears calloused and difficult for anyone to win over.
To some degree, this reveal makes Harleen’s transformation into Harley less dramatic, as some of the pieces were already in place for her to become a villain. It is much more psychologically interesting for a character to break bad without having any previous hints of a sinister agenda. In comparison to Harleen, Harley actually seems to have more compassion. The Joker might have initially been interested in Dr.
