Alfie Allen, perhaps best known for his eight seasons as Theon Greyjoy on GameOfThrones, has made his Broadway debut in Martin McDonagh’s “Hangmen”—and picked up a Tony nod in the process
He first encountered the play during its West End run in 2015, when the role was played by Johnny Flynn. “I had to eradicate my memory of the performance I saw,” Allen explains, so confounded was he by the piece initially. “For me it was really about Martin and Matthew guiding me in the right direction towards doing my own thing.
His purpose at the hangman’s pub is ultimately revealed, but the real thrill is watching Allen play off of other characters, particularly Gaby French’s Shirley, Harry Wade’s teenage daughter. That he stands out amid heavyweights like Threlfall is no small feat and a credit to Allen’s finely calibrated performance. “Mooney is quite playful, but at the same time, he is very much the opposite of playful,” he says. It is that fine line that Allen treads so deftly.
The larger themes of capital punishment and blind justice as meted out by an unforgiving state—and what happens when it goes wrong—do not feel onerous or overly didactic when presented through McDonagh’s characters. “[] lets those issues bubble to the surface without giving you big red arrows on social commentary,” says Allen. The gallows are not usually a place for nuance, but the play asks big questions about crime and punishment without shoving the audience toward an answer.
