Handwriting fluency in kindergarten linked to better reading abilities | JordsBaker

Children who handwrite fluently in their first year of school are likely to be better readers a year later, prompting researchers to urge caution about relying too heavily on technology in the classroom.

"It did, and it also predicted their reading abilities," said one of the authors, Anabela Malpique of Murdoch University, whose work was published in the journalChildren who hand-write fluently in their first year of school are likely to be better readers in year 1."Our findings are really well aligned with what's coming now in terms of neuro-imaging studies, showing that indeed reading and writing are connected, and especially handwriting via paper and pen," she said.

"We don't know the impact that digital will have in terms of the impact handwriting will have for brain development," she said. "It's too early to make a decision about removing pens and papers from schools. It may be counterproductive, because evidence is saying that handwriting by paper and pen is still important."

"This is obviously a concern, but it is not only a national concern, it's an international concern," said Dr Malpique.Associate Professor Matt Bower, an expert on technology in education at Macquarie University, said it was important that young children did not spend too much time on technology, and that they developed writing capabilities and fine motor skills. But use of technology in the classroom need not displace those activities.
