The federal government has contacted major airlines about helping repatriate the more than 10,000 Australian citizens and tourists from Israel; a police taskforce has been set up to co-ordinate responses to protest activity in NSW. Follow updates here.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says the federal government should ensure Israel knows Australia can provide it with weaponry and other support. Speaking after the death toll from Palestinian militant group Hamas’ attacks had surpassed 1000 people within four days, Dutton said Australia “should make it very clear that we stand up for certain values”.
“I think we should make it clear to Israel, as well, that, if requested, Australia can provide munitions or other support, specialist support, if that’s going to provide support to the resolution of what is obviously a horrible situation,” he told Melbourne radio 3AW. Dutton said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had “rightly” described current geopolitical tensions as belonging to one of the most concerning periods since the Second World War.
