Protestors took to the streets across the Middle East and beyond, emergency aid to Gaza remained stuck, and Israel evacuated more communities near Lebanon.

| Israel plans to completely sever its links with Gaza once its military operations against Hamas are done, the country’s defence minister has revealed.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres headed to the Sinai region on Friday to try and unblock the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza, while air strikes continued to pound what Israel said were Hamas positions inside Gaza.Despite a week of negotiations, late on Friday the Rafah gate still remained closed to the roughly 100 truckloads of emergency food, water and medical supplies waiting on the Egyptian side to relieve the blockade on Gaza’s 2.3 million residents.

“Israel will not be part of the solution in terms of giving work. We’ve disconnected the umbilical cord,” the official said. There has also been tension in the West Bank, the occupied Palestinian territory nestled between Jordan and Israel. Thirteen people were killed during an Israeli assault on the Nur Shams refugee camp there on Friday.Israeli military spokesman Lt Col Jonathan Conricus told Reuters that in the West Bank “the threat is elevated”.There have been angry protests in West Bank towns, with one demonstrator telling Reuters: “Give people weapons. Let them clash. We’ll show what we can do”.
