Hamas militants on Saturday handed over to the Red Cross four Israeli women hostages under a truce deal in the Gaza war.

Four Israeli hostages wave on a stage before Hamas fighters hand them over to a team from the Red Cross in Gaza City on January 25, 2025. Hamas militants handed over four Israeli women hostages to the Red Cross in a January 25 swap after parading them on a stage at a square in Gaza, an AFP journalist reported.

The hostage-prisoner exchange is part of a fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas that took effect last Sunday, and which is intended to pave the way to a permanent end to the war. The ceasefire agreement should be implemented in three phases, but the last two stages have not yet been finalised.

During the first, 42-day phase that began Sunday, 33 hostages Israel believes are still alive should be freed in staggered releases in exchange for around 1,900 Palestinians held in Israeli jails.

Israel Intensifies Attacks in Northern Gaza, Killing at Least 25 PalestiniansIsrael Intensifies Attacks in Northern Gaza, Killing at Least 25 PalestiniansIsraeli forces have intensified their attacks in northern Gaza, including in the Shejaia area and outskirts of Gaza City, resulting in at least 25 Palestinian deaths. The air strikes destroyed targeted areas, but there was no immediate statement from the Israeli military regarding the incident or the identities of the victims. Meanwhile, in al-Buriej, central Gaza, Israeli forces targeted a fighter alleged to be operating in an area that launched rockets into Israel the previous day. Following a warning from the Israeli military, residents were ordered to evacuate before the attack. According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, two people were reported killed in the al-Buriej attack, while 15 more died in an air strike in Jabalia. However, there was no immediate confirmation from Gaza health officials. The Israeli military claimed the attacks targeted Hamas fighters. Northern Gaza, including Beit Hanoun, Jabalia, and Beit Lahiya, is now nearly completely destroyed after residents were evacuated. There are speculations that the Zionist regime aims to make the area a buffer zone after the conflict ends, although Israel denies these claims. The Israeli military campaign in Gaza has claimed the lives of over 45,500 Palestinians, according to health officials in the Hamas-controlled area. Nearly the entire 2.3 million population of Gaza is now displaced, with a large part of the territory devastated.
