The five-time All-Star began his career with the Giants, playing in San Francisco from 1962 to 1971 before being sent to Cleveland in one of the worst trades in Giants history.
He won the Cy Young with Cleveland in 1972 and with San Diego in 1978 just after turning 40, and played for eight teams total over his 22-year career.
Perry grew up on a farm in Williamston, North Carolina, plowing fields behind a mule when he was 7. He was a three-sport star at Williamston High School, averaging nearly 30 points a game in basketball. But baseball was his passion. In 1958, Perry received a $60,000 bonus to sign with the Giants. He was far from an instant success. On the morning of May 31, 1964, his major league record was a lackluster 6-8 with a 4.50 ERA.
The Giants played a doubleheader against the Mets in New York that day. They won the first game. The second game went 23 innings. Almost out of fresh arms, manager Alvin Dark called on Perry. And Perry called on a pitch he had been working on but was reluctant to use in a game.
