A ham sandwich product bearing a Halal logo has sparked a major controversy in Malaysia, leading to a raid by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living. Former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and co-host Shahril Hamdan discussed the issue on their Keluar Sekejap podcast, emphasizing the sensitivity surrounding halal certification for Malaysian Muslims. They argued that using a halal logo without proper certification erodes trust and risks damaging the credibility of the halal stamp.
The issue with the ham sandwich product using a Halal logo has been making a lot of noise lately, leading the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living to raid the store and pull it off the shelves.
He went on to explain that the issue isn’t going away, as there will always be ham sandwiches. Using a halal logo without a halal certificate is more about inspection and following the law, but it gets tricky because of sensitivities.
