The death of a 'high profile' inmate has sparked a lockdown at one of Perth's major prisons on Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to the maximum security facility in Canning Vale about 8am on Thursday, after the 40-year-old was found unresponsive. The state's Department of Justice, which manages Hakea Prison, confirmed an investigation was underway.

Bropho is suspected to have been beaten to death, according toThe discovery prompted the facility to lockdown two prison units while detectives from WA's Major Crime Division investigate his death.Bropho is the biological grandson of the late Aboriginal elder Penny Walker, who adopted Kelly when he was two years old.

Just days before his death, he appeared in Perth's District Court to be sentenced over the abduction and sexual assault of a nine-year-old girl last year. Described as having an intellectual disability and schizophrenia, Bropho managed to lure the girl from a Doubleview park before assaulting her at his home.
