January 2023=22,510, December 2023=17850, March 2024=13,179 These official figures are dramatic manifestation of Hajiji’s efforts to reduce hardcore poor in Sabah from January 2023 to 1st Q 2024. Impressive results.
By: Datuk John Lo
Never in Sabah since the phenomenon of hardcore poor began to emerge that so much attention, concentrated and co-ordinated efforts devoted to assist Sabah’s hard core.It is not possible to assist Sabah’s hardcore poor to escape from poverty in an environment of a poor performing economy. Those who have been uplifted from dire poverty are the beneficiaries of an improving economy in the last 3 years. During this time, Sabah has realigned the Sabah/Federal relationship to a more equitable balance.
Our ultimate target is to totally eliminate, yes! 100% wipe out hardcore poor within next year. Sabah should be able to cleanse away the stench of 8 out of 10 poorest districts in Malaysia. First, the oil palm plantations should do their part. They reap billions each year from the 1.7 million hectares in Sabah without developing downstream. Each big plantation can easily absorb 40 to 100 families, train them for a month or two. Give them decent wages and housing.
First worthy of mention is Assaffal P Alian . He has advocated that all Sabahan political leaders must speak out with a “COLLECTIVE VOICE” TO FIGHT FOR SABAH’S RIGHTS IN MA63. His suggestion of “COLLECTIVE VOICE” is as refreshing as it is important for the future of Sabah. Masidi’s assertive approach in the 40% share of net revenue is the way to go. It is blatantly clear that the Federal Government has been procrastinating payment from the beginning of MA63. Mahathir and Lim Guan Eng have categorially said “insufficient fund” to pay Sabah. In reality, they have refused to pay Sabah so that they can have more funds for Malaya. Most satisfying that Masid won’t stomach this Federal nonsense like previous political leaders.
