A woman in China miraculously escaped serious injury after being struck by a car, not due to the collision itself, but because of a seemingly harmless hair clip . The 61-year-old resident of Chengdu, identified only by her surname Du, was crossing a street on February 3rd when she was involved in an accident and landed on her head. This fall caused a claw clip she was wearing to penetrate her scalp. She was conscious when admitted to General Medical 363 Hospital in Chengdu at 3:20 PM.
Speaking to Chinese media on February 8th, Dr. Tian Fengming, an emergency physician at the hospital, explained that half of the woman's gold-colored claw clip was broken, while the other half remained embedded in her head. Dr. Tian added that three of the clip's teeth had fully sunk into her scalp, but fortunately, they had bent upon impact and did not reach her skull, making removal easier. Claw clips, both metal and plastic, can pose a danger, stated the doctor, as they are typically worn at the back of the head, close to the brain stem. The brain stem, the lowest part of the brain, controls essential functions like breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure, according to the US National Cancer Institute. If a sharp object, such as a claw clip, penetrates the skull in this area, it could lead to respiratory and cardiac arrest, potentially fatal consequences. Dr. Tian advised individuals who wear claw clips to exercise caution during physical activities or other daily tasks and to remain calm and seek immediate medical attention in case of an accident
