Gyms, concert venues and the entertainment sector are reacting to the unwelcome surprise of tickets and memberships becoming subject to PST.
Dan Farthing, president and CEO of Level 10 Fitness, said he’s trying to wrap his head around the decision and why the government did it now.
Furthermore, he feels exercise, fitness and health are things the government should be encouraging at every possible opportunity, and slapping a tax on it might serve as a further deterrent. At Saskatchewan’s Cultural Exchange, the impact appears to be more inconvenient than devastating according to executive director John Kennedy.But with restrictions gone and COVID-19 still lingering, he said there is a degree of hesitancy to actually go out and be in public. He said he feels it will take time for people to feel comfortable being back in crowded venues, and right now, that is where his focus rests.
While the Saskatchewan NDP has called on the province to do more in addressing wait times for surgeries, Opposition finance critic Trent Wotherspoon said now is not the time to add PST to a number of services. Moe said the new PST charges are “very small and incremental,” adding that these services largely charge GST.
