A 'callous' unsupervised learner driver who caused the death of his 19-year-old passenger Chelsea Maddox, then fled the scene, has been jailed for nine years but could be eligible for parole in less than two.
Guy Sean Leigh Gallagher, 27, has been jailed over a 2023 fatal crash that killed Maryborough teenager Chelsea Maddox.Gallagher has been sentenced to serve nine years in prison but could be eligible for parole in less than two years.
The court heard Gallagher was on a learner’s licence when he was driving his friend on a provisional licence, Chelsea Jane Maddox, to her home in Bundaberg from Maryborough on February 19, 2023.Crown prosecutor David Finch told the court that after reaching speeds of up to 114 kph through residential streets, Gallagher lost control of the car and collided with a power pole.
"The fact that Guy Gallagher not only caused her death but then chose to flee the scene without any regard or care for Chelsea, leaving her to die, is beyond comprehensible to us," Mrs Maddox said. The court heard Gallagher had provided a written apology, but it had not been received by the family prior to the hearing.
