Meridian Police Officer Kennis Croom, 31, was responding to reports of a shooting when he arrived at the scene of an armed man and a deceased woman. There were reportedly also children on the scene, but they survived due to Croom's involvement. He had been on the force since October last year, having previously served with the Brookhaven Police Department.
The armed suspect, 31-year-old Dante Marquez Bender, went on the run following the shooting. Officials believed he was somewhere between Interstate 59 and Interstate 20. On Thursday, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation issued a public warning. By Friday morning, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety canceled the Blue Alert issued for Bender. There had been a $10,000 reward offered by U.S. Marshals for information that led to Bender's arrest.
"It's sad. I'm very sad. And it's heartbreaking when you got a young man who all his life wanted to be in law enforcement. He was more like a nephew to me," said Tuscaloosa Police Department Deputy Chief Sebo Sanders. Meridian Police will be holding a press conference on Friday at 12 p.m. EDT regarding the investigation.Croom leaves behind a wife and two children. Instead of flowers, his family is accepting donations to the Croom Foundation, a charitable organization that helps children in high-crime areas within west Alabama, where Croom was from, get into college.
