According to director James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 isn't going to be what MCU fans expect. When the first Guardians of the Galaxy came out in 2014, fans praised the film's sense of humor, unique tone, and retro soundtrack. The Guardians have since gotten only one other standalone film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 2017, and have otherwise appeared in more supporting roles in other MCU movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
While details regarding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 have been hard to come by, Gunn has previously confirmed that filming for the movie is now underway in Georgia. Stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, and Karen Gillan are all expected to return, in addition to Will Poulter joining the cast as Adam Warlock, and Chukwudi Iwuji in an unknown role.
"I think that I'm really happy. I gave a bunch of scenes to Marvel right before Christmas break. Kevin [Feige] went... They were all really, really, really stoked. But also, it's not going to be the movie people... It's different than what people are going to expect. It's a hard road, but I'm really happy with it so far."
The Guardians of the Galaxy movies have always felt unique and unpredictable in the broader MCU slate, so the idea that the upcoming third installment won't be what people expect certainly makes it difficult to guess what is in store for fans. With Gunn having previously confirmed that the upcoming third installment will be his last Guardians of the Galaxy movie, the film has the added task of needing to tie up the storylines of all the main characters.
With Gunn having previously shown his willingness to kill off beloved characters with the death of Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, it's hard to say what fates await the Guardians. As the upcoming third installment does appear to be the last, many fans are likely expecting an epic Avengers: Endgame-level conclusion, but perhaps Gunn has something entirely different in mind. Fans will have to wait and see what Gunn has in store for them when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters. .
