Growing the college student vote paid civicnation
Comprised of a diverse group of nearly 400 nonpartisan organizations working with over 1,600 campuses, the SLSV Coalition has grown immensely in our membership, reach, and ability to support local leaders on campuses across the country.
In 2018, we aimed to drive a 10 percentage point increase in college student turnout over 2014 levels—a goal which was shattered. College student turnout increased by 21.1 percentage points, but overall turnout in the U.S. increased by just 13.6 percentage points, indicating that something special was happening on college and university campuses across the country.
But while that national college student turnout number is important, there are nuances that we must consider when working to increase college student turnout nationwide. First, history has shown that people with access to higher education tend to vote more than those without it. By focusing on the higher education community, as opposed to other sectors, we may unintentionally amplify already existing inequities within the electorate.
That’s why, as we move into 2020, the SLSV Coalition hasn’t just set an overall turnout goal. We also set goals to close turnout gaps among students of different races, ethnicities, and ages.” shows the largest racial turnout gap among college students in 2018 was between Asian American students and white students, with a 15.3 percentage point difference.
