The products bypass stringent safety checks and could contain banned substances, warns Galen Centre.
PETALING JAYA: A public health advocacy group today urged the authorities to come down hard on online stores dealing with medicines and supplements, warning that some of the drugs may contain hazardous and banned substances.
The Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy said many sellers and vendors were now offering such products on social media and popular platforms like Lazada, Mudah.my and Shoppe, bypassing safety and quality checks. “It has become increasingly common for Malaysians to look online for cheaper alternatives to existing drugs and supplements, believing that because they are openly available on these platforms they must be legitimate and safe,” said Galen Centre CEO Azrul Mohd Khalib.“The government must strengthen and update its current regulatory and enforcement framework in order to improve surveillance, consumer safety and protection,” said Azrul.
