The Navy spokesperson confirmed that Naval Air Station Patuxent River had an aircraft “executing supersonic test points as part of an approved test plan in a supersonic approved area.” The Department of Defense manages a strip of airspace known as the “Test Track.” It’s used for military testing, some of which requires supersonic speeds. It begins approximately three miles offshore over the Atlantic Ocean, the Navy said.
Military aircraft from NAX PAX and neighboring military bases visit the offshore Test Track on a routine basis to avoid flying over populated areas, but in spots “close enough for the safety of aircraft and pilots and to conserve on jet fuel to and from the test area,” the spokesperson said.
