'Our voting rights have been made subject to the micromanagement of state leaders. And while local leaders have been stalwart in defense of those rights, they fumbled the ball on Tuesday in terms of actual election administration.'
One is that several statewide races likely will be close — close enough to effectively be decided by Harris County voters, since this is the state’s most populous county. Consider the race for attorney general. Incumbent Ken Paxton has been pulled into a runoff against Land Commissioner George P. Bush, on the Republican side. Democrats are expected to have a runoff too, between ACLU attorney Rochelle Garza and former Galveston mayor Joe Jaworski.
Beyond that, though, delays like this in reporting election results actually do undermine confidence in our elections, a claim Republicans surely will make. In this case, they would be right. As Longoria said Tuesday night, it’s a big county. But Harris County leaders know that, and need to plan accordingly.
