7 out of the 10 “Greenest” vehicles sold in the U.S. for the 2019 model year are full-electric cars

To some this might seem like a no-brainer, but according to an annual report compiled by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy , seven out of the 10 “Greenest” vehicles sold in the U.S. for the 2019 model year are full-electric cars. The remaining three are fuel-frugal gas/electric-powered hybrids.
Sure, electric cars are energy efficient, and they produce zero tailpipe emissions, but the ACEEE’s Greenest car awards are based on deeper data than that. The organization’s detailed methodology further considers a car or truck’s overall"cradle to grave" impact on the environment, including manufacturing, a model’s energy source and its eventual disposal and recycling. Electric-vehicle ratings are also based on emissions associated with the production of electricity.
“Vehicles with some form of electrification, whether hybrid or battery electric, continue to take every spot on the Greenest List,” says Eric Junga, senior transportation research analyst at ACEEE. “Despite a few automakers’ cutting back on their car fleets to focus on crossovers and SUVs, the Greenest List shows that many consumers have a range of good eco-friendly options.”
The ACEEE's Greenest vehicle in the U.S. – for the third year running – is the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, which earns a “Green Score” of 67 points. The average Green Score among all vehicles is 42, withreceiving rock-bottom scores as low as 25 points. Scores are based on an environmental damage index , which reflects its cost to human health from air pollution based on the aforementioned factors. A theoretical EDX of zero would warrant a Green Score of 100.
