Under-pressure on climate strategy, Woodside plans to develop multiple projects for liquid hydrogen in the US, part of its work on end-user emissions reduction.

Woodside Energy aims to follow up its first hydrogen project in the United States with a string of similar projects targeting production of the fuel for heavy transport, as the generous subsidies provided under the Inflation Reduction Act prove a magnet for capital in the space.the bill, which includes $US369 billion of incentives in energy security and climate changeWoodside’s head of new energy, Shaun Gregory, has big expectations of growth in liquid hydrogen in the US.

But Mr Gregory said Woodside would need confidence in the emissions reporting regime of all its customers and some kind of agreements with customers to be able to set goals for Scope 3 emissions. In the meantime, its focus in this area is on projects that would help its customers decarbonise. He said Woodside wants to have “multiple” hubs for liquid hydrogen in the US, given the size of the market, signalling the 90 tonne per day H2OK project would be just the first.

“It probably has accelerated it, but at the same time, it brought a lot of other enthusiasm and projects and capital that’s also added a bit of uncertainty on who will customers sign up with,” he said.

“Right now, were just finalising all the commercial agreements with the providers, including the Ngai Tahu, on kind of the way forward, but we’re really excited about getting that project into engineering to finalise the concept and take it to FEED [front-end engineering and design] next year.
