The deputy minister asserts the region is poised to become a pivotal centre for the nation’s economic resurgence.

Liew Chin Tong said past animosity and competition have simmered down, paving the way for closer ties between Malaysia and Singapore.

In an interview with The Edge, Liew placed importance on the instrumental role the region can play in igniting the nation’s economic resurgence as the second metropolitan region. “The prevailing emphasis is now on establishing shorter and more secure supply chains. Under these circumstances, Greater Johor Bahru emerges as a viable production hub for Singapore.

Liew said the upcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System, set to be completed by 2027, is a step in the right direction to facilitate easier commuting between the two areas.
