Jackson Gates, who is the great-grandson of former Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, admitted to shooting 20-year-old Chris'shon Coleman in May 2022.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The great-grandson of former Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson pleaded guilty on Wednesday to murder in a May 2022 shooting that investigators believe was tied to earlier gun violence involving Jackson’s family.
Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Shirley Strickland Saffold asked Jackson Gates, with the former mayor sitting with his family members in the courtroom, if he was guilty. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped an aggravated murder charge that carried a potential sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
A witness who knew both Coleman and Jackson Gates told police that she was “1,000%” sure that Jackson Gates was the gunman, according to the records. Police believe the shooting is connected to a series of gun violence that touched the former mayor’s family and dates back to the 2019 killing of a man outside a West Side barbershop.
