Grant Wahl is remembered by the photographer who took one of the last known pictures of him.
Though he was eventually let into the stadium with an apology, the photojournalist in me thought his detention was a big story. Getting a photo of him working with his T-shirt on would be good. I saw Grant in the media center and went up to him while he was mid-stream writing. I asked if it was OK to grab a couple of photos of him working, and he nodded his head before resuming writing. I took about 10 frames, thanked him, and walked off to get into the stadium and my position to cover the game.
Wahl knew how big a story America becoming a soccer nation was, and he wanted to ensure he accurately and correctly chronicled it. He took a holistic approach covering the nascent growth of American soccer fan culture in a nation with no soccer tradition.
