"This is one of the magnets that used to hang on my great-grandmother's fridge. She died when I was in high school, and afterwards, she wanted her things laid out so her large family could pick things that were important to them. I got a couple of other things, but this is probably the most meaningful.She was one of the first members of her family to graduate high school, worked as a cook in the school for years, and made sure all four of her children got college degrees.
Despite growing up in a place where education was a luxury, she made it a necessity, and, aside from her family, it was the thing she valued the most in life. I'm the first person in the family to attend a state college, and next year, I'll be the first person on that side of the family to get a degree in a scientific field.
The magnet was given to her as a gift when she worked at the school, and as a kid, I had always loved it. I've brought it with me to college to keep her with me on my journey and remind me how important education is.
