A diverse approach to scale contact tracing Sponsored by gradsoflife
Without a coordinated national effort to scale up contact tracers, it’s not surprising that states and cities have been left to urgently search for contact tracing talent on their own. But with more thanfiling for unemployment claims since March, it’s important for state governments to help county health officials prioritize diverse talent.
And so absent an inclusive contact tracing hiring strategy, states may end up with an army of PhD students or furloughed white collar workers. Put another way, states may end up designing contact tracing job programs that only exacerbate inequality of opportunity. Governors could combat this inequity by setting aside a percentage of contact tracing jobs for those Americans who have not enjoyed the benefits of their state’s broader economic success. They should direct their respective task forces, cabinet secretaries, and health agencies to design equitable and inclusive contact tracing job programs that prioritize diverse talent.
In order to reduce time for county officials to go find contact tracing talent, states should also consider hiring staffing and placement firms that specialize in serving. These firms can serve as the employer of record for contact tracers, and make it easier for counties to quickly access vetted, pre-screened, career-ready contact tracing talent.
