KUCHING: Amid speculation of a political shake-up in Putrajaya that will see the end of Pakatan Harapan, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has stated that it will remain independent and look after the state's interests.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state-based coalition was not involved in any possible cooperation between Umno and Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"The position of GPS is this: Whatever problem they face that side is their problem, not Sarawak's problem."We are on our own. We are GPS, and we look after Sarawak's interests," he told a press conference after chairing a GPS supreme council meeting at PBB headquarters here on Thursday . Abang Johari said GPS would monitor the political developments in Peninsular Malaysia but would not get involved.

"We are independent, and we remain that way. We just observe," he reiterated, adding that Malaysia needed a strong and stable government. It has been speculated that Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is seeking political cooperation with Dr Mahathir and support him as prime minister for a full term. We're sorry, this article is unavailable at the moment.
