Pacific National CEO Paul Scurrah says rail has been the “most environmentally friendly” and safe way to haul goods but the safeguard mechanism will hit the railway freight systems.
“For many years now, everybody knows that rail has been the most environmentally friendly and safe way to haul goods, particularly between capital cities, and is even more important now with the climate action required,” Mr Scurrah told Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood.
“What we see though is governments have been hideously unprepared for this mode shift … driven by the unlevel playing field between rail and the trucking industry and what this now means is that there’s a further impost on rail operators to … reduce our carbon emissions … the safeguard mechanism as it currently stands actually doesn’t help.”
