The government needs to make sure super is “actually funding” Australians’ retirement as Labor plans to reform superannuation tax concessions, according to Independent MP Allegra Spender.
“I do agree with the principle that super is there to fund retirement not to minimise taxation,” Ms Spender told Sky News Australia.
She said she is “concerned” by the government’s current conversation considering using super for government-funded housing and “other social areas”. “Super money is your money so you should make your decisions about what investments you think suit you, and whether you want to invest in clean energy or housing or those other really important things.
“I think the government question is should you get a big tax concession at a certain level – so I think those are two separate questions.

QLD government needs to eat ‘humble pie’: CanavanThere has been a “60 per cent increase in unlawful entries from juveniles” which climbed the very month after the Queensland government “weakened” laws relating to juvenile bail, according to Nationals Senator Matt Canavan. “That led to an absolute surge in particularly youth crime,” Mr Canavan told Sky News Australia. “The Queensland government told judges to only lock people up as a last resort – bail had to be their first option. “Then they’ve had the temerity … to unreasonably criticise judges for doing exactly what the government wanted those judges to do. “I just hope the Queensland government eats some humble pie here, stop trying to blame everybody else, just accept it.”
