The federal government aims to reduce the number of women killed by their intimate partners by 25 per cent each year and to establish a national peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family safety.
Indigenous women are six times more likely to be victims of homicide due to domestic violence than non-Indigenous women, and they are also 33 times more likely to be hospitalised, according to the plan.
The plan flags providing services in prisons for Indigenous people who are both victims and perpetrators of family and sexual violence, including children, and establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men's advisory body. Linda Burney, the minister for Indigenous Australians, said it was designed to address the disproportionately high rates of violence First Nations women and children experience, and recognise the unique challenges and barriers they face when seeking help.
The government has also set a target to increase the understanding of violence against women across the community, saying ending violence means changing community attitudes.
