Gov. Spencer Cox issued an executive order authorizing paid leave for state employees to help with flood mitigation and relief as the state braces for further runoff.

is good for drought relief and will benefit the Great Salt Lake, but will create more flooding in the immediate future. He said the Great Salt Lake is already up two feet from its November low, and is on pace to gain five feet by the end of the spring.

"We're about 10 feet below the lake's average, so to get five feet of that back, potentially, in one spring kind of exceeds our wildest dreams," he said. "However, there is a downside to our water year and that is flood risks. Flooding is the No. 1 disaster risk in Utah historically, and whenever you get rain on top of snow like we've had these past couple of weeks, there's a very good chance of flooding. We've already seen some of that in Washington County.

Cox's executive order grants all employees of executive branch agencies up to eight hours of paid administrative leave to volunteer for flood mitigation in their county or an adjacent county. "We want an army of residents ready and I know we will have volunteers joining them from across the state as they are called upon to do so," he said. "I would just also like to add that we're calling on all Utahns to use common sense. We have not had spring runoff like this since 2011. ... It's very important to keep children away from fast-moving water. Please do not drive in flooded streets. The potential for drowning is real. Stay alert.

Utah bans abortion clinics in wave of post-Roe restrictionsUtah bans abortion clinics in wave of post-Roe restrictionsUtah's Republican Gov. Spencer Cox signed legislation Wednesday that will by next year ban clinics from providing abortions, setting off a rush of confusion among clinics, hospitals and prospective patients in the deeply Republican state. Administrators from hospitals and clinics have not publicly detailed their plans to adapt to the new law, adding a layer of uncertainty on top of fear that, if clinics close, patients may not be able to access care at hospitals because of a variety of staffing and cost concerns. With the law set to start taking effect as early as May 3, both the Planned Parenthood Association of Utah and the Utah Hospital Association declined to detail how the increasingly fraught legal landscape for providers in Utah will affect abortion access.
