The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was the first MCU project ever conceived for Disney+.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is the first Marvel project that was ever pitched for Disney+. The special, which debuts on November 25, is the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project to hit Disney+, following in the footsteps of the more than a dozen live-action miniseries, animated series, documentaries, and specials that followed the release of their first miniseries WandaVision in early 2021.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY This week, Marvel Entertainment shared a featurette exploring the surprising origins of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. During a talking head interview, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that the special was the first project ever pitched for Disney+. He said that Gunn originally proposed the idea while on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.
It is the very first thing every conceived for Marvel Studios for Disney+. On the set of Vol. 2, James Gunn said we should do a holiday special. We all had a laugh, we thought that would be great. And then they wrote it in like three days.
However, Gunn's relationship with Marvel Studios also became strained after shooting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In the summer of 2018, old Tweets of his which featured problematic jokes resurfaced, causing Disney to fire him while Vol. 3 was in pre-production. Although Gunn was eventually reinstated as the director of the third film, by this time it was early 2019, and he had already taken on the job of directing The Suicide Squad for DC Studios.
The pandemic also delayed the release of The Suicide Squad, allowing Gunn to create the spinoff series Peacemaker, which launched on HBO Max in January. Only then did he return to helm Vol. 3 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which would account for the many-year delay between it being pitched and actually coming to fruition.
