Thousands of excited fans poured into Academy Sports + Outdoors last night to buy championship gear, according to the retailer.
As fans poured out of Minute Maid Park to celebrate the Astros' World Series-winning victory in Game 6, there were three main destinations: the streets of downtown, inside packed bars and the nearest sports retailers.Katy-based retailer Academy Sports + Outdoors re-opened its stores Saturday night after the big win, and workers at stores across the Houston region were ready to greet growing crowds of customers.
At 11:30 a.m, the line to get into the team store at Minute Maid stretched over two city blocks. Several fans in line were already sporting championship gear bought earlier in the morning, or the night before. Connie Branam said she usually would have slept in on a Sunday, but she woke up at 7 a.m. to drive in from Humble and get her championship gear. When she got in line around 9 a.m., it was already stretching down the block, she said.
Running Game Clothing Company, a Houston sports merchandise producer run by a group of fans, posted its championship series shirts online the night of the game. In the 12 hours that followed, the company said it sold more shirts than it had during the entire month of October — an already high month for sales, given the Astros' postseason success.
