Gossamer joins forces with Alex Proba to create a collection of stunning statement rugs
When the creative collaborators began sketching out ideas, they initially considered smaller decor items before settling on rugs, which felt most aligned with the magazine’s theme. After all, sprawling out on lush carpeting is a much more physically immersive experience than propping yourself up on a throw pillow. “Rugs create a space in your home where you can sit or do yoga, dogs and cats rest on them—[they offer] moments of relaxation,” says Proba.
Of Proba’s distinctive artwork, von Pfetten says, “You can clock her aesthetic from a million miles away.” In order to combine her color-soaked look with the Bauhaus-inspired design of Gossamer, Proba worked closely with the brand’s creative director, Verena Michelitsch, to blend the two styles. Gossamer’s signature shades—deep green, peach, mint, and rich goldenrod—mingle with hues of teal, cool lavender, neon orange, and rosy pinks in amorphous shapes, ribbons, and drips.
Proba looked to Gossamer’s non-linear typography and drew on the name of the publication itself to create compositions that feel subtly psychedelic. “I tried to invent new shapes that are still very me,” she says. Those shapes enhance each piece’s tactility as well, von Pfetten explains. “If you don't physically touch them, you wouldn't necessarily know, but the rugs have different pile heights, too—Alex created these topographies, which we got very excited about.
While Gossamer is a lifestyle brand that “looks at the world through a green lens,” they’ve long steered clear of obvious stoner culture signifiers, focusing instead on the broad variety of people who enjoy weed. Even so, as von Pfetten says, “The cultural conversation around cannabis is both a lot more open, and yet not destigmatized at all.
Gossamer typically donates 2% of their product sales to organizations working to support communities harmed by the War on Drugs, though in the case of this collaboration, 5% of the sales will go to Medicins Sans Frontiers, earmarked for Ukraine. “These rugs range in price from $445 to $3,525, and we offer custom sizes, too. Someone making that choice should have the knowledge of where their money is going,” von Pfetten says.
