Will Kenyan President's Offer of Talks Bring End to Protests?President William Ruto has been prompted to announce that he is ready to meet the opposition "anytime" after months of anti-government protests that have sparked international alarm and calls for dialogue. Since March 2023, opposition leader Raila Odinga's Azimio coalition staged nine days of street protests against the high cost of living, with the rallies sometimes degenerating into looting and deadly clashes between security forces and demonstrators. Odinga called off demonstrations in April and May, 2023 after Ruto agreed to dialogue, but the talks broke down, with Azimio organising several rounds of protests in July 2023. While Azimio claims 50 people were killed by police during the three-day protests from July 19 to 21, 2023, the Interior Ministry has remained silent on civilian deaths, only choosing to speak about a police officer's death and the destruction of property - including police stations that were allegedly torched by protesters. Odinga also accused President William Ruto of refusing to "listen to the people and lower the cost of living" while also saying the head of state has been reluctant to meet him, to find a solution to problems facing the country. He called on the International Criminal Court to intervene, accusing law enforcement of killing demonstrators with impunity. While Odinga denies he is out for a handshake with President Ruto (as he did with former president Uhuru Kenyatta) - that could lead to a power-sharing pact, he admitted that Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu was in Nairobi to try mediate the political crisis in the country. Meanwhile, the leadership of Kisumu County has called for a thorough probe of bullets used to shoot demonstrators in the lakeside city last week.
