House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) reported a massive fundraising haul during the second quarter of the year, far surpassing his previous total as Republican leaders pull out all the stops to retain their majority in 2024.
Emmer raked in $3.1 million during the first quarter, bringing his fundraising total to $5.3 million since taking over as majority whip in January, according to his office. The second-quarter haul marks a nearly 50% increase compared to the first quarter when Emmer raised $2.2 million.“The work necessary to deliver on the promises we made to the American people never stops,” Emmer said in a statement.
Emmer has transferred more than $2 million to the National Republican Congressional Committee since taking office, with more than two-thirds of that raised during the second quarter, according to the whip's office. Another $300,000 has gone directly to incumbents and other GOP candidates as the 2024 cycle heats up.
The strong fundraising numbers come as Republicans seek to hold on to their slim majority in 2024, especially after Democrats managed to outraise their GOP counterparts during the midterm cycle. All 435 seats are up for grabs in 2024, of which 46 are considered competitive. Most swing seats are held by Democrats, giving the GOP a slight advantage as it prepares for the next election cycle.
However, of those competitive seats, 18 are held by Republicans in districts that voted for President Joe Biden in 2020, compared to just five held by Democrats who must defend their seats in districts carried by former President Donald Trump.
