New York Rep. Peter King, in his statement on Facebook announcing his retirement, said he would oppose impeaching the president
In his statement on Facebook announcing his retirement, Mr. King said he would oppose impeaching the president, if the House ultimately votes on articles of impeachment.
“In the coming weeks and during the next year I intend to vote against President Trump’s impeachment and will support the President’s bid for re-election,” Mr. King said. The Long Island lawmaker is known as a moderate Republican and has at times bucked President Trump to vote with Democrats. This year, he supported expanding background checks for gun purchases and banning drilling for oil off of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, two bills the administration opposed.
Mr. King, a former head of the Homeland Security committee, cited a desire to be with his wife Rosemary and his family as the main reason for retirement. He is 75 years old. “This was not an easy decision,” he said. “But there is a season for everything and Rosemary and I decided that, especially since we are both in good health, it is time to have the flexibility to spend more time with our children and grandchildren.”Copyright ©2019 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
